Stress Management Techniques That Actually Work

Stress affects sleep, appetite and weight. These practical, evidence-informed techniques help you calm your mind in minutes — and build resilience over time.

Some stress is a normal part of life. But when it stays high for weeks, it can disturb sleep, increase cravings for sugary and salty food, and make it harder to stick to healthy routines. The good news: small daily practices can make a real difference.

In the moment

  • Box breathing: breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4. Repeat for two minutes.
  • Name it: simply noticing "I'm feeling stressed" helps you step back from the feeling.
  • Move: a brisk five-minute walk releases tension and clears your head.

Every day

  • Protect your sleep with a regular bedtime and a screen-free wind-down.
  • Eat regularly. Skipping meals leads to energy crashes that feel like anxiety.
  • Limit caffeine after mid-afternoon.
  • Practise pranayama or meditation for 10 minutes — consistency matters more than duration.
  • Stay connected. A conversation with a friend is one of the most effective stress relievers.

Write it down

Keeping a short journal — three things that went well today, and one thing you'll do tomorrow — helps shift attention from worry to action.

When to seek help

If stress or low mood lasts for several weeks, affects your work or relationships, or you feel unable to cope, please speak to a doctor or a qualified mental health professional. Support is available, and asking for it is a sign of strength.
