Managing Type 2 Diabetes Through Diet

Food choices play a big role in blood sugar control. Learn how balanced meals, portion awareness and regular timing can support your diabetes management.

Type 2 diabetes is increasingly common in India, but diet and lifestyle can make a meaningful difference to blood sugar control. Nutrition works alongside your medication and medical care — never as a replacement for it.

Focus on the type and amount of carbohydrate

  • Choose whole grains, millets and pulses over refined flour and white rice.
  • Watch portion sizes of rice, roti and potatoes.
  • Pair carbohydrates with protein and fibre to slow the rise in blood sugar.

Fill up on fibre

Vegetables, salads, dals, sprouts and whole fruits (instead of juices) help keep blood sugar steadier and keep you fuller for longer.

Keep regular meal times

Skipping meals and then eating a large one can cause sharp swings in blood sugar. Regular, moderate meals are easier for your body to manage — especially if you take medication.

Limit these

  • Sweets, sugary drinks and packaged juices.
  • Fried snacks and bakery products.
  • Excess salt and processed foods, which also affect blood pressure.

Stay active

A 10–15 minute walk after meals can help lower post-meal blood sugar. Combine regular walking with strength exercises a few times a week.

Monitor and review

Track your readings as advised by your doctor and bring them to your consultations — they show how your body responds to different foods.

Our clinical nutritionists design therapeutic diet plans for diabetes, PCOS, thyroid and heart conditions, working in coordination with your healthcare provider. Never change or stop medication without your doctor's advice.
